Year Long Project (Nuntius Salutem)
This is our group Nuntius Salutem's final capstone project solution for solving the issue of cell phone caused driver distraction. Our prototype, as seen in figs.1-3, is essentially a phone case that does several things to limit the time the user/driver will take their eyes of the road and onto their phone. Firstly, our case features a clear plastic window that allows the user to see things like navigation but does not let them scroll through their apps, go on social media, type our text messages, etc. The other side of the case, literally, is where the digital side of things come into play. (fig. 2) We programmed 2 NFC tags, which are passive devices that executer the tasks assigned to it when scanned by the phone. Upon the user sliding their phone in, the phone will scan tag 1 which will: engage Car Dock and Android Auto, will turn off notification sounds and wifi, enable bluetooth, automatically resume any media, enable auto-brightness, and set ringer type to silent. Car Dock will also automatically respond to incoming texts for you and will let the sender know you are busy driving. Android auto will connect to your car and also allow you to send hands free texts and calls, set navigation, and much more. Other functions mentioned are preformed to alleviate the need for a driver to go to their phone and adjust little things like brightness, volume, bluetooth, and wifi. When the phone is removed from the case the second NFC Tag is scanned which will: disable car dock, android auto, and bluetooth; the volumes go neutral, and the user is taken to the homescreen. We also attached a pop socket on the rear of the case to be used with a pop-socket compatible air vent or suction cup mount. (fig. 3)
